Most flea bites occur around the ankles, waist and lower legs. Typically a cluster of bites occur. The irritation which can occur for days, is due to the injection of saliva which acts as an anti coagulant.
Fleas are thought to be an increasing problem due to the increasing number of household pets.
The main flea species found in Australia are:
- Cat Flea – the most common flea in Australia. It attacks cats, dogs, humans and other mammals.
- Dog Flea – less common but similar in appearance. Attacks a wide variety of mamals.
- Human Flea – due to an increase in housekeeping standards this flea is not commonly found.

Flea Life Cycle
EGG – the adult female lays 4-8 eggs in a cluster (usually on the host animal) The eggs are oval shaped, light coloured and can take from 2 days to a couple of weeks to hatch. The female can lay several hundred eggs in her lifetime.
LARVA – Larvae feed on the organic material available and can take up to several months to develop. Once they fully develop, they weave a cocoon.
PUPAE – in the cocoon the pupae matures to adulthood. After the pupae develop, it is able to stay in the cocoon until it detects a host nearby.
ADULT – in about 5 – 14 days the metamorphosis is complete. The adult fleas remain in the cocoon until they sense vibration, heat, noise, pressure or carbon dioxide. Adult fleas are quite active and often move by jumping. In less favorable conditions, the whole life cycle can take as little as 18 days or more than a year.
