What are Carpet Beetles?
Carpet beetles are basically what their name suggests. These small beetles lay eggs which then hatch, and the larvae then feed on natural fibers and carpets. They may also feed on other materials including but not limited to wool, silk, fur, curtains, underfelt, wall hangings, animal skins, feather, horns and some stored foods.
Facts about Carpet Beetles:
Adult Carpet Beetles aren’t the ones that cause the damage to your home. The adults feed mostly on nectar and pollen outside your home.
Carpet beetle larvae are most destructive, as they feed on leather, wool, silk, feathers and fur. The larvae can live for several weeks without food as they move about and forage.
Both adults and larvae prefer dark, undisturbed places. As a result, you may have a large infestation before you even realise.
Carpet Beetle Prevention Tips:
Regularly vacuum carpets and rugs to minimise the chances of eggs turning into larvae.
Consider steam cleaning fabrics, carpets and rugs so that skin and hair cells are removed.
Wash and store your Summer/Winter clothing in vacuum sealed bags.
Close doors and windows or invest in screens to prevent beetles entering your home.
Seal or repair any cracks that you see as possible entry points for beetle larvae.
Check indoor flowers and plants for any signs of beetles.
Carpet Beetle only eat organic material, so as an additional precaution, choose synthetic materials.
